VICTORY FOR HAVASUPAI

04.22.2010 Reports today shared the conclusion of a lawsuit between the Havasupai Tribe in Arizona, and Arizona State University. The bitter lawsuit surrounded blood samples taken from tribe members by ASU between 1990 - 1992, ostensibly to study the tribe's high rate of diabetes, and help them. Instead, the samples were given to researchers throughout the United States to study a variety of issues, many in tension with tribe beliefs and initial agreement with ASU.

The lawsuit was settled this week in Maricopa County Supreme Court. The settlement includes return of blood samples,  a payment to the tribe of $700,000, scholarships for tribe students, a high school and a medical clinic for the Havasupai. The impoverished tribe, who live in a remote area called Supai, are accessible only by helicopter or burro trail into the Grand Canyon.

The Arizona Republic reported that there is hope that this "is also the beginning of a partnership between the universities, principally ASU, and the tribe."

The blood samples will be taken down to Supai where they will be prayed over by the tribe, will rest for four days, and then, be buried, all per tribe tradition.

  An Invitation to Native Youth

Greetings! I hope that you have seen Whisper n Thunder’s Children n Youth pages, and perhaps read the January issue’s story on Native actors in the movie, New Moon. These pages were a good start, and there’s more to come. They include an article on Avatar on the Young Adults page - written by a young adult in England!

But now...we need your help!

If you are a Native student, Whisper n Thunder would like to publish your writings. We want to have a page or two that’s dedicated to you – the writers of today.

Want to be published? Want to be able to share with others around the world what you have to say? Send in your work to Whisper n Thunder. We’ll have a look and be in touch! Stories – fact or fiction, poetry, artwork (art work / photos - need to be sent in a .jpg format) – its up to you.

The world needs to know you're there and you have something to say. What do you have to tell us? You are neither too young or too old. Your voice is important and needs to be heard.

The choice is yours.

Send your work to bkfidlin@hotmail.com for the upcoming July
issue ~ Thank you!

What's Next for US Administration?
CIR Unlikely
But there are stories to be told...

Immigration & A Native Woman
~ Lorraine Watson ~

My husband is an "Undocumented" illegal immigrant from Guatemala came here as a child and lived here all his life.  we started the process for legalizing him spent numerous amount of money an then immigration picked him up; he returned back here to nevada in my care: as a documented "illegal immigrant" in the u.s. he couldn't' official live with us, had no i.d. no papers, no means of working, supporting us as a family, or a way to make his own.

He started drinking one day the next day a terrible occurance happened he had beat me up, rapped a woman who sufferes from cerelby peralsey in a wheelchair down the street at a shopping mall.

The police had picked him up and he currently has 6 charges on him.  So this is a sad story and needs to be told of how we connect but not connect with the immigrants of the u.s. how an known illegal immigrant is drivin to insanity and etc.

Editor's Note: CIR or  Comprehensive Immigration Reform, will likely be delayed by Washington due to the election cycle now upon us.

Shawnee Tribe & Tornado Update ~ Posts from Dave Kitchen; AIM Santa Barbara

FEMA is helping the tribe and they do have a good relationship. Cleveland County threw their hands and walked away the excuse they used…they have no authority on Indian land !!!!!

American Red Cross & Salvation Army trucks drive by the communities and REFUSE to help ... they drive directly by the Shawnee Relief Center! Why is this happening?

There are approximately 5,000 people without electricity including the Tribal Housing Authority. The Clinic and Resource Center is open in Little Axe for those who need help with shelter for both native and non-natives.

Absentee Shawnee of Oklahoma appreciate all we are doing, but so much more needs to happen… Help spread the word and lets get help out to our relatives, quickly.

         ~ UPCOMING EVENT ~

Native Blood Drive

August 2010
Washington, D.C.

On August 18th and 19th we will be gathering in Washington DC for a Native Blood Drive calling for all Mixed Blood, all Nations and all Tribes to unite in one common goal to seek religious freedom to practice the religion of our ancestors as freely as they once did but which has been denied to us by the United States government.

We also will be seeking the right to make and sell our crafts as Native American Made and not just as Style-Arts as we now have to label them. We want the discrimination to end once and for all because we are and have always been descendants of the First Peoples on this Continent.

Many have been booked to speak and perform on these two days as we expect over 1,000,000 people.

We are asking everyone to prepare to meet with us at the Lincoln Memorial by saving your hard earned dollars and vacation time to take a stand for our future and those that will come after us which will be our children and our children’s children.

Chief Peaceful Eagle

FingerPrinting - One Woman's Story

Regarding fingerprinting w/ public assistance programs ~ my story...

I had applied & was approved for Section 8 housing. ( my annual income is a few dollars more than $5,000 a year). I had been approved on Section 8 in the same county (Dickson Co. in Tennessee) in 2003.

I am 59, a disabled former RN, Vietnam Veteran, don't drink or do anything illegal &  I have been arrested ONCE in Wisconsin in 2006 & that was for defending myself against a would be attacker! The charges were dropped & case was dismissed. (The guy that attacked me had a LONG record for drug manufacture, wife beating, drug sales etc etc etc)

When I re-applied for Sec. 8 Housing assistance in Dickson Co. TN., I was approved Sept 9, 09.  Three weeks later I was sent a letter saying there was
an "indication I had been fingerprinted" and that the Dickson
County Housing Authority accused me of "criminal activity;" said if I didn't consent to fingerprinting by an outside source (non-police)  that they would deny my application."

Which they did, because I didn't have the gas to drive a 60 mile round trip to Dickson at 6am on a Tuesday in the middle of the month. At my place after paying rent and all the Utility bills, Necessary hygiene Items and Toilet paper etc etc. there isn't anything left. for Gas or much else.

I had called them about this and all I got was the run around.

That is my story.
