The Creative Drum
Editor's Note: This month's featured artist is Joseph Strider, recent recipient of the 2011 Silver Arrow Award in recognition of his musical achievement. Read about this Native musician as told to Creative Drum editor Lisa Sahani.

Lisa: Is there a specific message to your music - simply a feel good bad or is there a social justice component - a message?

Joseph: There is Definitely a social justice component to my music. As well as a feel good and bad component. On Meanings within Meanings within Meanings (MWMWM) a number of the tracks have to do with thoughts and paths seen and taken from experiences of being part native and viewing the world through my 'city' raised eyes.

"And I Thought of You" is a song of honoring for all who participated in the 1st Vision Quest in which I took part.

"Dog Soldier" is an instrumental, That by listening to the story of it's meaning of the struggle of the 1st Nations plight and closing one's eyes and allowing the notes to move you, one can feel the tranquility, beauty, and ultimately the demise of life, in the blink of an eye.

My compositions are formed by the movement that (I believe) the Spirit moves me. The flow must "feel right!"  As a self-taught guitarist, initially the notes make no difference. The song must move me in order for me to complete the composition. Otherwise, I will cease the motion.

Of course, the words MUST pertain an element of dignity. I am not of the mind set to frivolously throw words around, just to make a rhyme. Words are very important to me. After all, misprints and / or lackadaisically formed documents have been the ruin of many a well thought out plan.

Love, is definately foremost in my mind as I write lyrics. Mixed with emotions that we all share during our journeys here on earth.

Lisa: What was the best gig you've had to date? The worst?

Joseph: I'd have to say that I think that my best gig is when I am able to perform a particular arrangement entitled... The Magic of Music, the Spell of Words. When performing this... I have chosen certain pieces, both original and covers, along with storytelling, in an attempt to move an audience to look within themselves. To be fully aware of the roles in which they play in the lives that surround us, and ourselves as well, and how this might affect our future.

I feel that we only have this moment until the next.... How shall we spend it ? I feel that we've only one thing in which we have in our TOTAL control. That being our "CHOICE!"  After we have made this choice, the repercussions and / or the benefits are totally left to fate. Only to place us in a position to have to make another choice.

When I get to perform, it is always a good thing to me. I will always play from my heart. I love performing. Being on stage to me, feels like home. In other words... Never a "bad gig!"

Lisa: What haven't you accomplished yet?

Joseph: Whoa, that's a big question LOL!  But concerning music... I would like to be able to fully sustain my life by music alone. To be able to create and perform until I die. Passon. To me would be the ultimate accomplishment !

Were I to be in this position, many would benefit. There is much work to be done for the descendants of the 1st Nation. I have dreams of our people living life in the way that they should be. In harmony, love, and prosperity in life. I think of a beautiful future which exists, after I am no longer here on earth.

Lisa: If you left the Native American music scene, what would the world miss out on?

Joseph: Please refer to the question of accomplishments :)

Lisa: Upcoming dates?

Joseph: A lot of things are up in the air. Some are set. I have the honor of being in the position of having a few people looking out for me. I am working on a small tour for the month of March with NAF Jonny Lipford.

The record label that i am currently affiliated with, Spirit Wind Records CEO Donald BlackFox, is currently working on several possibilities. And there are a number of pending venues currently being negotiated. I would like to have a concise listing for you, but at the moment, I can't do this. But I will say that it appears as if my dance card is going to be filling up pretty quickly! For now... The Millinium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA occuring in Feburary 2010. The Kipona Pow Wow In Harrisburg, PA in September... Sometimes things pop up all of a sudden.

My booking agent/ manager is Ms.Terri Bridgwater. One may contact her through my web site at...

Lisa: If you could hook up and tour with one group who would it be and why?

Joseph: That is a no brain-er for me... Bruce Cockburn!  He has been a major influence for me. With his penchant for social justice and outstanding presence of mind and music he has moved my heart and being. Secondly.. Tommy Emmanuel... That guy just ROCK's! Not to mention, Neil Young, a long time influence.

Lisa: What instrument would you least like to have in the band - why?

Joseph: Actually, it's just me. In fact when I am fortunate enough, I am able to have accompaniment with Liz Mallin, violinist extraordinaire. I do however welcome inquires. My main prerequisite, besides being a good musician is that I prefer one who is not led by their ego!

Lisa: What other names did you consider before setting in on your current name?

Joseph: I did not consider other names. More interestingly I believe is how I come to titles for my pieces. One for instance is a title for a song off of my work "Little Bird." The song "Just Like That"... Some time ago I had a dream where I had a sit down  with Neil Young. It was just a shooting the breeze thing. He had to leave, and as he did so ,he turned around, reached into his back pocket, pulled out a folded piece of paper, handed it to me and said that he wouldn't be using it. "Merry Christmas!"  I unfolded the paper to find these lyrics. I read them, then quickly woke myself up to write them... This happened, just like that!

Biography

Acoustic guitarist Joseph Strider has covered a lot of musical ground in his career thus far. From boy soprano in school choirs, to playing with a cover band, Strider has spent the years developing his own unique style, a style that fits in no established genre and can best be described as modern Indigenous alternative.

Strider received his first guitar at age nine. As a teen and young adult he gained valuable experience over a six year period of touring in his home state of Texas.  In the years since he has refined his unorthodox playing style, determined to fully utilize the potential of the acoustic guitar. Inspired by guitarists such as Michael Hedges, Bruce Cockburn and Andre Segovia, the self-taught Strider has pursued his musical ambitions with a determination and eloquence that not many can match.

Recently nominated for a NAMMY award in the category of Debut Artist of the Year, Strider is now turning his attention to his third album, ‘String Theory.’  This long anticipated album will feature Strider at his instrumental best, a man, his guitar, and the music they create.

With no formal training or instruction, Joseph Strider has had the freedom to explore and develop a very personal relationship with his chosen instrument.  That relationship is fully realized with his upcoming instrumental album ‘String Theory.’  ‘String Theory’ is the manifestation of the circle between the mind, hands and guitar, guided by Spirit to be a conduit for the emotions felt by Strider during composition.

In addition to the spring 2011 release of ‘String Theory,’ the new year will be a busy one for Strider.  Several solo venues are scheduled along with a collaborative tour with Jonny Lipford to begin in March. A number of projects spearheaded by Donald Blackfox of Spirit Wind Records will be announced as they reach fruition.

But no matter how frenzied the pace becomes, it is the music that moves Joseph, the voice of Spirit that he has been blessed to hear and to pass on, that inspires him daily, that fuels the prolific flow of new guitar pieces.
